Hedgie The Hedgehog Mix Media Painting : Creative & Easy

Merlin’s Beard! Today I’m showing you the very first project for this year’s Halloween porch decor. The theme will be Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone! I’ve been brainstorming in my head for months now and I’m so excited to show you this first glimpse – my Harry Potter Flying Keys Wall Art.

Supplies

  • Maya Road Geometric Leaf Die
  • Maya Road Royal Key Charms
  • Maya Road Stackable Wood Frame Charms
  • Maya Road Metal Vintage Secret Box Key
  • Xyron Creative Station Lite with 3-inch Permanent Adhesive Cartridge
  • Embroidery hoop and plain fabric
  • Die cutting machine and necessary plates
  • White cardstock
  • Glitter cardstock
  • Stamp pads
  • Scissors
  • Craft knife and self-healing mat
  • Unicorn Blood (if not available, use silver metallic paint)
  • Hot glue

Directions

Place a folded piece of white cardstock onto your die cutting machine plates. Insert the leaf die in between, and roll through your die cutting machine. Weed out the excess paper by poking through the holes in the back of the die.

I’m going to use four keys – three are identical to each other, and one is old-fashioned and silver. So I will need to make six leaves total for the wings. Also, get your embroidery hoop and fabric ready.

If you watch closely during this scene in the movie, you’ll see that the wings are slightly iridescent. So I used some stamp pads to add color to the leaves.

After the ink dried on all of my leaves, I ran them through my Xyron Creative Station Lite to apply adhesive to the back. I used the 3-inch adhesive cartridge.

Then I stuck all of the leaves onto some glittery paper, about half an inch apart. Then I just cut around the leaves, leaving about a 1/4 inch border around the leaves.

I headed to the Forbidden Forest to see if I could find any unicorn blood. But I couldn’t, so I just used some silver metallic paint instead. That’s ok, if I accidentally drank any, I’d only have a half life, a cursed life.

While that dried, I started gluing the leaves (now wings) to the fabric. First, I positioned the three identical keys so they were lying at different angles. Then I slipped the wings underneath them. Once I liked everything, I started gluing. I bent the wings at the top of the stem, and applied hot glue to just the back of the stem, and pressed it onto the fabric. I repeated with the other wing, overlapping the first wing at the stem. Then finally, I applied a thin bead of hot glue to the back of the key and pressed it so it was on top of the wings. Repeat with the other two sets of keys/wings.

One of my girls reminded me: “Mama, remember that one of the wings on the key is broken. But just one wing!” So I took my scissors and cut a jagged piece out of the wing. Then, she said, “Are you sure it wasn’t just bent?” Since I already cut the wing, we’re sticking with broken.

I actually glued the wood frame underneath the solid piece, to give the solid piece some height because the key would be poking through the hole. So now the key and the wood frame underneath are on the same plane and I’ll be able to glue them evenly onto the fabric. Oh, I also used some rust-colored stamp ink to go around the edge of the wood piece to give it some patina. After I glued the key hole with the key onto the fabric, I was ready to glue on the wings. The wings have to face forward, so I kind of folded the stems at an angle before I glued them on to the underside of the key.

Pull the fabric one last time and tighten the screw on the embroidery hoop (note – you can also use a wood plaque/wood piece). All done with my Harry Potter Flying Keys wall art!

Harry Potter Flying Keys Wall Art - The Silly Pearl

I’ll be making one embroidery hoop for each scene leading to the Sorcerer’s Stone. So that includes, Fluffy, then the Devil’s Snare, then the flying keys, the wizard’s chest, and finally, the mirror and the stone with You-Know-Who. Hope you enjoyed my Harry Potter Flying Keys Wall Art, and look for the rest of the scenes in the coming weeks!

As you can see, the Harry Potter key art is not just a set of flying keys, but an epic story that will be available to you when you put up this wall art. All magic aside, this design looks very stylish and impressive. In case you want something even more creative, try making your own design or telling us how we can create it for you!

Frequently Asked Questions

The Winged Keys, sometimes known as Flying Keys, were locks that Professor Filius Flitwick probably charmed with a Flying Charm to protect the Sorcerer’s Stone.

What do flying keys mean?

The Philosopher’s Stone was protected by the Winged Keys, also called Flying Keys, which were magically made to fly by Professor Filius Flitwick.

What is the golden key in Harry Potter?

A Gold Key is a key that can be used endlessly. Your Gold Key can be used repeatedly in contrast to Silver Keys, which can only be used once.
