Step 1: Prep the Materials

Gather your materials. Tear off pieces of the newspaper into approximately 1/2″ strips or squares. I found that it was easier to decoupage the eggs with smaller newspaper strips can be used to create a unique heart pattern on your eggs.. I also only used pieces of newspaper that were black and white (no color printing) to keep that classic newsprint look. Take apart the plastic eggs so you have two separate halves.

Step 2: Apply the Newsprint

Using a generous amount of the decoupage glue or paste, attach the pieces of the newspaper to the outside surface of one half of the egg with your paintbrush, adding a heart design for a personal touch. If you’ve never decoupaged anything before, it’s a super easy and forgiving process. Spread a layer of glue under the piece you’re attaching, then paint the glue on top of the paper too. It works like a glue and a protective coat or sealer. Be prepared though, it’s a messy job!

Step 3: Trim and Dry

Continue to layer the small pieces of newspaper until you have completely covered the outer surface of the egg halves. Use scissors to cut a straight edge for any pieces that line up along the bottom rim of the egg halves, creating a polished look for your blog photos. Normally, I would just wrap the newspaper around to the inside, but since we are snapping these back together, I didn’t want them to be too thick to close.

FAQs

Q: What are newspaper Easter eggs and how do they differ from traditional dyed eggs?

A: Newspaper Easter eggs are decorative eggs made by covering real or artificial eggs with strips of newspaper using glue or a papier-mâché technique. Unlike traditional dyed eggs, which rely on color absorbed into the shell, newspaper eggs create a textured, layered finish and allow for collage-style designs, special patterns, or printed text to show onto the egg for a unique, vintage look.

Q: Can I make newspaper Easter eggs as a simple project for Easter with kids?

A: A: Yes, newspaper Easter eggs are an excellent project for Easter. They can be adapted for all ages: younger children can glue pre-cut strips onto blown or plastic eggs, while older kids can practice smoother papier-mâché techniques to achieve a more polished finish. Always supervise with scissors and glue, and consider using washable glue mixed with a little water for easier cleanup.

Q: What materials and form should I use to make newspaper-covered eggs by hand?

A: A: To make them by hand you need eggs (real blown eggs, wooden eggs, or plastic forms), newspaper, PVA glue or a mix of glue and water, a small brush or your hand for smoothing, and a sealant for the finish. The form of the egg can be any size; plastic or wooden eggs work best if you want a long-lasting decoration rather than a fragile shell.

Q: How do I get a smooth finish when applying newspaper to an egg?

A: A: For a smooth finish, tear rather than cut newspaper into thin strips, apply thin layers of diluted glue with a brush, and use your hand or a soft brush to gently smooth each strip flat as you go. Multiple thin layers create a stronger, smoother surface; sand lightly between layers on wooden or plastic eggs and seal with varnish for a polished look.

Q: Are there eco-friendly or green variations of newspaper Easter eggs?

A: A: Absolutely. Newspaper eggs are inherently green because they reuse recycled paper. To make the project more eco-friendly, use non-toxic glue, biodegradable sealants, and avoid plastic forms by blowing out and preserving real eggshells. You can also decorate using natural dyes or green paint finishes to emphasize the eco-conscious theme.
