DIY Coffee Mug With State
Here’s a great tutorial for a DIY coffe mug with your state on it. I have loved looking at all of the DIY coffee mugs out there and wanted to do my own. I have also loved all of the projects i’ve seen that incorporate using the state you live in. So, I thought what better way to incorporate the two.
Before we get into the tutorial, I wanted to let you know that I went the porcelain paint route. This seemed to be a more fool proof way. I looked into using the Sharpie marker technique for the mugs. However, there seems to be a lot of mixed reviews out there about whether or not the Sharpie marker truly lasts. I wanted to make sure my results and all of my hard work were going to last and not immediately come off, so I went with the porcelain paint route.
Here’s What You Need:
- Porcelain Coffee Mug
- Pebeo Porcelain 150 Paint Marker 0.7
- Pebeo Procelain Chalkboard Black Paint
- Photo copy outline of the state you choose. I did shrink mine to fit.
- Washi Tape/Electrical Tape
- Paint Brush
- Scissors
Step 1:
Shrink your state to fit your mug. You can use a copy machine to reduce the size of your state so it fits on the mug just right or scale your state image before printing it. Cut the state out. Tape it onto the mug. I used Washi tape because it peels off easily and doesn’t leave a sticky residue. I also considered where the state would be located on the mug when I was actually drinking coffee. Personally, I like having the design face away from me so people can see it while your drinking coffee.
Step 2:
Trace the shape of the state with the fine point (0.7) porcelain marker. Let dry for a couple of minutes. If you make a mistake while tracing, use a wipey. This will take off the porcelain paint.
Step 3:
Fill in the state with the porcelain paint. Let dry over night.
Step 5:
Go back in with a paper clip and etch out a heart (or any other shape) where you want it to be. I put my heart where Los Angeles is located within the state of California. If you make it too large, you can always go back in with the porcelain paint or the porcelain pen and make corrections. Follow the baking instruction on the bottle. Bake your mug.
There you have it! It’s so simple. Have fun personalizing you favorite state on a mug. This would make a great gift for any occasion.
Enjoy!
