My Daughter Lily absolutely LOVES hearts. As a matter of fact, she loves hearts almost as much as she loves painting. Well, with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we decided to do a craft project that was just a little bit different, but incorporated both of her loves. And the best part is it resulted with something she can keep for a long time. Well, if you’re looking for a craft that is simple to make and doesn’t involve construction paper, then these watercolor hearts are perfect for you.

Materials:

  • Paper Clay
  • Rolling Pin
  • Heart Shaped Cookie Cutter
  • Water Color Paints
  • Stamp for Words (optional)
  • Ribbon (optional)

Step 1:  Roll out the paper clay to about 1/4″ thick.

Step 2:  Take your heart shaped cookie cutter and cut out some hearts. If you want to add words or phrases use your stamps now. I also decided to make a hole near the top so I could add a piece of ribbon to make the heart easier to hang.

Step 3:  Let the heart dry over night or you can place them in the oven on very low heat for about 10 minutes.

Step 4:  Once the hearts are dry, it’s time to paint them with the watercolor paints. Have your kids go to town painting them. The trick with these, is to use plenty of water with the paints in order to get the softer pastel look. We made quite a lot of these and Lily really enjoyed cutting them out as well as painting/decorating them. She also really liked the way that they could be hung in things with the ribbon.

She did a great job trying a bunch of different decorating combinations.

Well, both Lily and I LOVE  how well these turned out and since we made quite a few of them, Lily decided she wanted to give them as gifts to her Grandparents. I think she’s right…. they make the perfect Valentine’s Day gift straight from the HEART! :)

Incorporating watercolor love hearts into kids’ art projects is a wonderful way to spark their imagination and creativity. Not only does it introduce them to basic art techniques, but it also fosters emotional expression and the joy of creating something beautiful. Let us know in the comments if you’ve tried any watercolor heart designs with your little ones or if you have any fun ideas to share. We’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences!
