I am so excited to our breakfast nook makeover! We moved here to our forever home just over two years ago, and making over the dining area from bland and blah to bright and cheery has been on my to-do list. With kids, however, I want my window blinds to be both safe and stylish. I’ve partnered with Smith & Noble to get the perfect window treatments for my makeover.
The Before: Assessing the Breakfast Nook
Our home was previously a rental, so it’s not surprising that they went, uh, neutral and inexpensive with their decor. Overall, our home is in great condition! But style-wise? I always feel ungrateful for complaining about our home, but ugh…the boob light! The tacky valance! The dingy yellow semi-gloss paint on the walls!

I can’t blame the previous owners for the table and dining chairs, a Craigslist find. While we love the walnut wood, the upholstery also fits in with the rental “theme”! So I can’t wait to spruce up the chairs with some bright fabric, perhaps a plaid or coastal print. Plus, the blank wall to the side needs some fresh, non-shiny paint and maybe a gallery wall of fun artwork.
Prioritizing Window Treatments and Lighting
There’s the view to consider. We love our neighbors, but adding some window treatments would be a favor to both of us. With proper coverings, they won’t have to look into our window to see our mess in the playroom. As for us, we will no longer have to look at our garbage cans while we’re eating. Not very appetizing.
I can’t wait to add some style and privacy to our breakfast nook ideas list, but safety is paramount. My girls are 8 years old, not exactly babies or toddlers, but we do spend a lot of time in the kitchen nook. It’s right next to the chairs, onto which they climb. So adding some cordless window treatments will give me one less thing to worry about.
Smith & Noble worked with me to find the perfect shades for my breakfast nook designed for safety. I opted for honeycomb shades that can open from both the top and bottom, and yes, they are cordless! This modern touch will replace the old curtain and instantly refresh the room.

Next on the list is replacing the light fixture. A new pendant light or a vintage chandelier could add that perfect farmhouse or cottage vibe we are looking for.
DIY Upholstery and Decor Plans
To truly transform the space, I plan to upholster the chair seats myself. A durable fabric is essential for daily use. I might even add some back cushions or throw pillows to make it extra cozy. If I had a built-in banquette or bench, I would definitely consider adding drawer storage underneath for smart storage.
For the floor, a washable rug under the dining table helps define the space within the rest of the kitchen. And maybe some wallpaper on an accent wall to bring in some chic texture? The possibilities for a diy design are endless! I’m gathering lots of inspiration from Pinterest.

FAQs
Q: Are breakfast nooks outdated?
A: Since breakfast nooks became popular in mid-century America, some individuals might believe they are out of date. However, despite being linked with more traditional decorating techniques, a modernized breakfast nook makeover can work beautifully with current designs. Adding modern lighting, sleek bistro furniture, or trendy wallpaper can make it feel fresh and stylish.
Q: What do you put in a kitchen nook?
A: In a corner, a kitchen nook can be constructed. It often consists of a table that seats four or more people, comfortable seating—often in the form of a small bench or booth with one or two chairs on the other side of it—and a table. A round table or a small bistro table is an excellent option for every size space. You can also add accessory items like a tablecloth or a vase of flowers.
Q: What is a breakfast nook in a house?
A: A breakfast nook is a small area that is frequently off the kitchen and often surrounded by windows or covered on three sides. It is frequently used for casual, sociable meals. In such a space, tables and chairs may be built-in or affixed to the floor in diner style, providing a cozy place to dine and enjoy the morning light.
Q: How can I update my breakfast nook on a budget?
A: You can refresh your nook by painting the walls or furniture, adding new cushion covers, or laying down a new rug. Even simple changes like swapping out a light fixture or adding artwork can make a big difference without being inexpensive. DIY projects like sewing new curtains or reclaiming an antique table are great budget-friendly options.
Q: What flooring is best for a breakfast nook?
A: Since it’s an eating area, you want something easy to clean. Tile or hardwood are popular choices. If you want warmth, adding a low-pile or indoor/outdoor rug is a practical way to add design and comfort underfoot while protecting the floor from spills.
