The girls and I are getting ready for Easter, starting with these Marshmallow Peeps Necklaces! It is the perfect edible charm to wear (and eat) during the holiday festivities.
Marshmallow Peeps Necklaces-Materials & Directions
It seems that Peeps peep’ed out of store shelves earlier this year, so I started gathering as many colors as I could. I also picked up some donut-shaped gummy candies as additional “beads”. We also used baker’s twine, straws, scissors and toothpicks. If you can’t find specific colors locally, you might need to order them online to get the perfect variety for your item.
Start by poking a hole into the marshmallow peep, in between the ears and head. In other words, perform a lobunnomy.

Once the straw appears on the other side, trim off the excess with scissors.

Then thread the twine through the straw, using a toothpick to help poke it through to the other side. Once the peep is centered on the twine, remove the straw carefully. You could also use a thin, clean jewelry chain if you want a different look, but twine is food-safe and festive.

Yay! You can stop here…

…or you can keep adding on more candies and more Peeps.

Here’s a close-up of poking the twine through the straw with the help of a toothpick.

Gifting and Alternatives
You can also package the individual ones in narrow cellophane bags for gift giving, and add a gift tag. You can download the printable gift tags here on my blog. These make excellent party favors!

While these edible necklaces are fun for a day, they don’t last forever. If you want a keepsake version of this cute bunny, look for a charm handmade from polymer clay. A polymer clay version won’t get stale and can be worn year after year!

FAQs
Q: What are marshmallow peeps necklaces and how are they made?
A: Marshmallow peeps necklaces are wearable treats made by threading marshmallow Peeps onto a string, ribbon, or edible lacing to create a fun, colorful necklace. They can be made by gently pushing a string through the body of each Peep, using food-safe skewers or licorice laces, or by attaching Peeps-inspired charms to jewelry findings for a longer-lasting, non-edible accessory.
Q: Are marshmallow peeps necklaces safe to eat and wear?
A: Marshmallow peeps necklaces that use real Peeps are edible, but wearing them exposes the candy to dirt, sweat, and bacteria, so they may not remain hygienic long. If you plan to both wear and eat the Peeps, avoid prolonged wear and keep them covered when not on the body. For safer, reusable options, consider making necklaces from Peeps-themed charms or polymer clay replicas.
Q: How long do marshmallow peeps necklaces last before going stale?
A: Real marshmallow peeps necklaces will begin to harden and lose freshness within a day or two, especially if exposed to air, heat, or humidity. To preserve freshness, store Peeps in an airtight container and avoid leaving the necklace exposed. Decorative, non-edible Peep replicas will last much longer and are better for keepsakes.
Q: Can children wear marshmallow peeps necklaces safely?
A: Children can wear marshmallow peeps necklaces under close supervision, but be aware of choking hazards for young kids. Avoid small parts and ensure the string is not a strangulation risk. For preschool-age children, it’s safer to use Peeps-inspired, non-edible necklaces or to supervise eating rather than wearing the candy for extended periods.
Q: How do I make a durable marshmallow peeps necklace for parties or events?
A: For a more durable necklace, use faux Peeps charms, polymer clay replicas, or ceramic beads painted to look like marshmallow Peeps and string them on sturdy cord or jewelry wire with crimps and clasps. These options withstand handling better than real candy and make great party favors or keepsakes.
