I love to tie-dye. I think it’s so much fun. However, I’m always looking to try different techniques with materials. I wanted to try a watercolor technique with tie-dying because the dyes are just like using watercolors. I grabbed a Tulip® One-Step Tie-Dye Kit® which is so easy to mix up and use, and away I went. I created two different mini tutorials for you. One how to create a basic watercolor look and the other one is how to create a flower using the same technique. It’s pretty simple and it was so much fun. So, let’s get started.
Watercolor Tie Dye Pillows
Here are some of the Tulip® One-Step Tie-Dye Kits®. They are so easy and convenient. Everything is provided into the box. Did you see the squirt bottle kit? I have to get my hands on that one next.
- Tulip® One-Step Tie Dye Kit®
- Plastic Cups for Dye
- Large Watercolor Brush
- Pillow Cushions
- Pillow Form or Fiber Fill
- Paper Towels
Step 1: If you’re using store bought canvas pillow covers, wash them first. If you are making them, wash them before dying the pillows.
Step 2: While the pillows cases are still wet from the washing machine, place cardboard on the inside of the pillow cover. This will protect the other side from being dyed.
Step 3: Prepare you dyes by adding the correct amount of water (per directions) and shake well.
Step 4: Pour the dyes into the plastic cups and make sure to have a cup for clear water.
Step 5: Start applying the dye onto the pillow. For a softer look, dip your brush in the clear water after you have applied some of the dye to the pillow.
Step 6: As you’re applying colors, think which colors will work the best together and will blend them really well. For example, purple into pink and blue into purple. Avoid color combinations that are going to mix poorly together. For example, because yellow and purple are complimentary colors, if you blend them together, you will get a muddle brown look.
Step 7: For the lettering, I’ll be completely honest, it was a little tricky. If you want to paint lettering on your pillow, try and practice the lettering first. You could also get a stencil and very lightly draw it onto the pillow, but, it would have to be drawn very lightly.
Now, here’s how to create the flower pillow:
Step 1: Start in the middle, and paint some yellow for the center of the flower.
Step 2: Working your way out from the center, repeat the same shapes and gradually get larger as you work your way to the sides of the pillow. Leave a little bit of fabric exposed so you’re able to go back in with some purple and blend your colors together. Remember to layer lightest first and then go back in with dark.
Step 3: Go back in and add a little purple to the pink flower petals. Then add green in the corners for leaves. Fill in with blue, blue green, and a light wash of blue. Let dry!
I love how these pillows turned out. My daughter has already claimed them both for her bedroom because she loves them too. You can follow ilovetocreate on their social media for all kinds of crafty inspiration here:

Frequently Asked Questions

Lay out your pillow cover, fold it into an accordion shape, and bind it every few inches with the rubber bands that come with your kit. Dyes should be applied to the pillow cover. You can use a single color or as many colors as you’d like, alternating with each section. It’s entirely up to you, so enjoy yourself!
What are the good things about pillows?
Your pillows help maintain your head, neck, and spine in a neutral position while you sleep, with your head square with your shoulders. This posture minimizes pressure on the neck, assisting in the prevention of strain on the joints and neck.
Can you dye pillow covers?
On the other hand, specific synthetic fabric dye is available for certain fabrics, like cushion covers made entirely of polyester. Since polyester is more difficult to dye than cotton, the dyeing process is more involved. First, you must heat the fabric in a pot over the stove until it almost reaches boiling point.
